BAM are ruing a series of films by Tomu Uchida at the moment - a Japanese director I knew nothing about before - save for a chat I had with Tim Blue last year about 'The Mad Fox', a film he'd seen at the Forum a few years back. It played yesterday and from the opening credits just totally captivated me. The film starts as what appears as a beautifully costumed struggle for power story, but about a third of the way in suddenly explodes into this totally unexpected theatrical wonder of all yellow feather dressed rotating stages, collapsing sets, flying flame spirits, foxes as humans and foxes in ceramic masks. All in this slightly hazy slightly soft rich 1960's colour.
The full list of films screening in the programme is here on the BAM website.
