HELLO, EMPTY GAY BAR

A few years ago I got my first My Space invite from a friend. I opened a profile with a view to keeping it empty to see what would happen over time. I would decline all invites for friends and would not invite any friends either. I would have no interests, activities, favourite books, films or TV shows. The Empty Gay Bar would always remain empty. Empty Gay Bar has one photo and a name - that's it. The bare requirements for an online identity. As country was a requirement too, Empty Gay Bar took on the nationality of the country the photo was taken in - on a late night in Helsinki in October 2004 in the back of an empty bar - the spectacular disco light display on an empty dance floor.

So at first there was nothing but the photo and empty columns...intructions urging Empty Gay Bar to make friends, send out bulletins, create networks. But over time the page began to be filled for Empty Gay Bar.

So here's the a look at what happens when a perfectly good gay bar is left empty. Here's a shot of the home page when I log in.
Meet Empty Gay Bar here, but don't try to be too friendly.

No URL, no friends, no mood, no status, no messages, no bulletins, no education, no interests... no wonder the Finnish suicide rate is one of the highest in the world.
I see this as a very interesting sociological experiment. But on a personal level I'm bothered by my motherly instincts and would so much like to embrace and comfort the poor empty gay bar.
